about Debbie

Cookbook author, editor, freelance writer and award-winning essayist Debbie Moose takes an omnivorous approach to life - try at least one bite of everything. She started out with a journalism degree and a love of newsrooms, but discovered that food writing could touch on most aspects of life and offer the greatest opportunity to connect with people. The only thing people like as much as eating food is talking about it.

Debbie was food editor for The News & Observer of Raleigh, N.C. for about eight years before becoming a freelance writer, after a total of 15 years working at daily newspapers. Her second cookbook, Fan Fare: A Playbook of Great Recipes for Tailgating or Enjoying the Game at Home, has just been published by Harvard Common Press. Her 2004 cookbook, Deviled Eggs: 50 Recipes From Simple to Sassy, published by Harvard Common Press, has been consistently popular. One of her essays was selected for the inaugural edition of Cornbread Nation by the Southern Foodways Alliance.

Debbie writes a regular food essay column, "Sunday Dinner," about food and life in North Carolina and the South. Along with garden writer Carol Stein, Debbie writes "Tasteful Garden," a column about how to cook what you grow and grow what you like to eat.

Debbie’s articles have appeared in such publications as the Dallas Morning News, the Charlotte (N.C.) Observer, the Raleigh (N.C.) News & Observer, Southern Living, Midwest Living, North Carolina Signature Magazine and Our State.

Debbie is a member of the Association of Food Journalists, the Southern Foodways Alliance, the Society of Professional Journalists and the International Association of Culinary Professionals. She has taught cooking classes and seminars on food writing for various age groups, and has done radio work.
